School Library

DGS Library is a vibrant welcoming space located at the heart of our school campus and is open throughout the schoool day.

The focus of the library is to create a space where students can read and study comfortably with access to a range of books to support the curriculum as well as leisure reading. The collection is continually being developed to ensure it remains fresh, relevant and caters to all reading interests and levels. Students are supported in their research and leisure reading by the School Librarian and the Performing Arts Teacher.

Reading is an ageless pleasure and we hope to help students foster a lifelong habit of reading, and that they will benefit from the enjoyment and overall well-being it brings.

Annual Book Week

DGS Book Week is an annual school-wide celebration of books and reading, organised by the Library and the English Department. Students enjoy visits from guest speakers from across the literacy world that have included authors, illustrators, editiors, journalists, storytellers and spoken-word poets. The week is packed with book-themed competitions and activities, with favourite characters walking the school halls for dress-up on World Book Day!

The 2025 Book Week was themed In Between Worlds, inspired by the title of local author Nicola Pierce's historical novel about the famine girls' journey to Australia. Students embraced the theme in the library window painting competition and decoration.

Get a feel for Book week at DGS and take a look at the 2025 guest list and the video below which was directed, filmed and edited by our talented Transition Year students!

In 2025 Drogheda Grammar School began the journey to achieving the National Wellread Award, which aims to promote reading for pleasurethrough the whole school community as research has shown that reading supports personal and academic achievement, as well as overall well-being.

A Wellread Committee of students, teachers and librarians, and parents has been established to develop the programme. Initiatives to support reading for pleasure to students, teachers, parents/guardians and the wider community will begin to be rolled out throughout the academic year 2025-2026. We look forward to sharing our Wellread journey here during during the year.

The Wellread programme supports Irelands Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Strategy 2024-2033: Every Learner from Birth to Young Adulthood which aims "to provide opportunities for everyone to develop as literate and informed individuals and to raise the profile of reading for pleasure and wellbeing in English, Irish and in languages."
