An tseachtain seo thosaigh imeachtaí Sheachtain na Gaeilge inár scoil. Mar chuid den amchlár bhí Tráth na gCeisteanna, Céilithe, Gúrú na Gaeilge, ranganna cluichí, An Poc Fada, tombas na seachtaine agus ceardlann scéalaíochta. Ghlac achan dalta ó chuile bhliain páirt sna gníomhaíochtaí éagsúla. Bhí iomaíocht ghéar le sonrú sa Phoc Fada. Bhain achan duine an-sult as. Mo bhuíochas leis an Uasal Ó Chinnéide as é a chur in eagar. D’fhoghlaim a lán daltaí damhsa nua ó na céilithe. Bhí bean Uí Phuirséil ar fheabhas mar bean an tí.

Ar an Máirt thug aoi speisialta cuairt ar an scoil. Chuireamar fáilte mhór Uí Cheallaigh roimh an scríbhneoir agus seanchaí iomráiteach Eddie Lenihan.  Chuir Eddie dhá sheisiún i láthair do lucht na tríú bliana. Ceardlanna thar bheith spéisiúil agus bríomhar a bhí iontu. Is seanchaí den scoth é Eddie agus thaitin a cuid scéalta go mór le lucht an Teastais Shóisearaigh.

I mbliana bhaineamar trial as Gúrú na Gaeilge don chéad uair. Rath mór ab ea é seo. Bhí taithí ag roinnt mhaith de na daltaí leis an chomórtas seo as Béarla ach dúshlán ab ea é trí mheán na Gaeilge. É sin ráite chuaigh siad i ngleic leis agus d’éirigh go hiontach leo. Ní mór domsa a rá go gcuidíonn seo go mór le scileanna cumarsáide agus foghraíochta na ndaltaí, go háirid i gcomhair Scrúdú Cainte na Gaeilge san Ardteistiméireacht.

Ar na mórlaige bhí seachtain iontach againn sa scoil. Rud difriúil is gníomhach achan lá. Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas go deo a ghabháil leis an fhoireann ar fad. Táim thar a bheith buíoch leo. Nár laige Dia go deo na ndeor siad! Cheana féin tá Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017 in aigne againne. Bhuel mar a deir an seanfhocal: “Tús maith, leath na hoibre!”.

On Monday last the events of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016 began in our school. On this year’s agenda were: quizzes, céilís, spelling bee, games classes, the Poc Fada, riddle of the week and a storytelling workshop.  All students from every year partook in the week’s various events.  In the Poc Fada we were treated to some stiff competition between the Juniors and the Seniors. All in all everybody enjoyed themselves. My thanks to Mr Kennedy for organising it.  Meanwhile at the céilís many students learned new Irish dances.  Ms Purcell was fantastic in her role as MC.

On Tuesday the social was treated to a visit by a very special guest. We gave a heartfelt O Kelly welcome to storyteller and seanchaí extraordinaire, Eddie Lenihan.  Eddie gave two great sessions with our Form 3 students.  Both workshops were extremely interesting and animated.  As an excellent storyteller, Eddie captivated the attention of all the Junior Certificate students that day.

This year we had our first ever Spelling Bee in Irish. What a success it was.  Most students were familiar with the format in English and this was going to be a challenge  using the Irish language.  Personally I believe that this activity greatly helps students conversational and pronunciation skills in the language, especially for the Leaving Certificate Oral Irish exam.

Overall we had a fabulous week in school.  We had something different and active every day.  I would like to thank all the staff sincerely for all their help in the week’s activities.  May God never weaken you!  Already plans are in motion for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017. Well as the old saying goes: “A good start is half the battle!”
