The Grammar School Ethos

"Every individual is of value and has something to contribute."

The school sets out to create a happy, caring and secure environment in which the individual student is able to develop to his or her full potential. An awareness of the needs of others in our community is recognised and respected.

Within a supportive atmosphere every student is expected to behave responsibly, and through enjoyment, enthusiasm and self-discipline become a better person. We recognise the need for mutual respect, trust and support, and every possible encouragement is given to develop good patterns of behaviour. Discipline is based upon common sense and reason.

All students are encouraged to build on their own achievements; while success at public examinations is important, student contributions on the sports field, in the debating hall or on the stage are equally recognised.

The Culture in Drogheda Grammar School

By "culture" we mean our values, our belief, our way of thinking, our way of doing things. Our culture shapes our personalities and our human nature. Our behaviours and attitudes are governed by our values and customs.

At Drogheda Grammar it is important that our culture is a positive one that values all students and all colleagues irrespective of their academic ability, the level of sophistication of their social skills, their ethnic background, their gender or their socio-economic background. It is important also that our culture is not being undermined by any small group's or clique/s that wishes to promote a conflicting subculture. Mutual respect, collegiality and mutual support are desirable cultural objectives within staff. It is important that commitment to these objectives is regularly renewed.

Over the many hundreds of years that Drogheda Grammar School has been in existence a positive culture has been promoted. This disposes us to: -

(a) Respect every student and always affirm his / her successes and positive efforts. To treat students courteously and respectfully.

(b) Respect colleagues. Support them when they are feeling despondent or discouraged. Offer advice and insight Invite their advice and insight.

(c) Accept that some parents may approach you in a belligerent way because they lack the social skills or have language difficulties to be politely assertive. Show tolerance, humour and flexibility when dealing with them.

(d) As our central ethos statement says "Every individual is of value and has something to contribute." Let each and every encounter, exchange and effort be guided by that aim.
