History Department

‘To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?’
Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 B.C.),

Teachers:

Trevor Elliott (Head of Department)
Richard Geoghegan

The History Department at the Grammar School encourages students to not just learn history but to achieve an understanding of it.  It has a substantial collection of resources at its disposal which include thousands of primary source documents, hundreds of history books to further support research as well as a very large collection of documentaries on both Video cassettes and DVD.  Computerised history games are used from time to time through the History room’s data projector facility to provide additional mediums of learning for students.

To ensure that students are taught through various mediums, and in a bid to facilitate greater understanding and a deep interest in the subject, teachers use all of the available resources to ensure that classes vary from day to day.  As a result quite a number of students have taken a true interest in history and this appreciation has led them to enter competitions such as the Trinity College Schools History Competition in which they have had much success to date.

History school tours are arranged by teachers to further support class work.  Examples of such tours would be:

A trip to Trim Castle
A trip to Kilmainham Jail
A trip to the GAA Museum
A Trip to Collins Barracks
A Trip to Wicklow Gaol
A trip to the Ulster
A trip to Newgrange
