Subject Overview

The aim of the Drogheda Grammar School Art Department is to provide an exciting and engaging creative visual education that develops practical skills in various areas of art, craft and design. We promote visual awareness, research skills and the evolution of ideas.

Our pupils have access to a state of the art range of drawing and painting materials, along with craft equipment such as printing presses and a kiln. We prepare our pupils to visually investigate the world around them through observation, drawing, painting, and 3D. Our pupils use critical thinking and evaluation skills to develop and process an idea from start to finish.

We aim to foster a lifelong appreciation of visual culture, including painting, sculpture graphic design, product design and crafts. Pupils learn how to approach perceived errors with positive attitude and see them as an opportunity to improve. They evaluate their own artwork and the artwork of others and examine it in the context of art history.

Pupils are encouraged to visit galleries, museums and to develop an awareness and enjoyment of the visual world around them.

Junior Cycle

The Junior Cert Art Craft Design course is project based. Pupils will learn key skills in drawing and painting through investigation and observation of the world around them and through imaginative work. They will learn a variety of new crafts including ceramics, batik, printmaking, textiles and puppetry and will have access to a wide range of drawing and painting and 3-D media.  They will be introduced to art history and will learn to make links between their own work and that of other artists, designers and craft workers. They will learn how to work independently and be self motivated. They will also develop skills in time management and planning through independent project work.

Transition Year

Transition Year Art gives pupils the opportunity to learn classical artistic skills and techniques that they may not have been able to explore in previous years. Furthermore, they can experiment with processes or projects without the restriction of a final exam. There is opportunity for group work, cross-curricular projects, or producing personal portfolios.

Senior Cycle

The Leaving Cert Art curriculum consists of two main components – practical and written.

The practical component of the course develops pupils’ skills in Drawing, Design and Craft. Pupils are encouraged to take advantage of the wide range of media and craft disciplines on offer to fulfil their potential. Crafts on offer include Batik, Calligraphy, Fabric Printing, Lino Printing, Carving, Poster Design, Puppetry, Screen Printing and Weaving.

The written component of the curriculum focuses on History and Appreciation of Art, which accounts for 37.5% of the overall mark for Leaving Certificate. Throughout the course pupils are taken on visits to galleries and museums in the region and beyond.
